Fine phase resolved spectroscopy of the X-ray emission of the Crab pulsar (PSR B0531+21) observed with BeppoSAX

چکیده
The Crab Nebula and the Pulsar have been pointed several times by the BeppoSAX satellite. We analysed all these observations, summed together, to study the main spectral properties with a good phase resolution. A new accurate estimate of the hydrogen column density in the Crab direction NH=3.23×10 cm−2 is given as derived from the analysis of the off-pulse emission at low energies. We studied the changes of the spectral index with the pulse phase and showed that in the interpeak region it is systematically harder than in the main peaks of about 0.4. We observed also a significant spectral steepening of the pulsed emission and showed that this distribution can be represented by a unique law with a linear variable log slope and apply it to the spectrum of the first peak. A two component model is proposed to explain the phase evolution of the spectrum. One component has the same profile observed in the optical while the other presents a maximum at the phase 0.4 with essentially the spectrum of the interpeak region. Two possible interpretations for the origin of the latter component are discussed.

RXTE observations of single pulses of PSR B0531+21 I: Flux variations
This article is the first in the series that analyze about 1.87 million periods of PSR B0531+21 (Crab pulsar), observed by the PCA detector aboard the RXTE x-ray observatory. The Crab pulsar’s x-ray light curve shows little variation over time scales ranging from days to a period (33.46 milli seconds). The standard deviation of its x-ray flux variation is ≈ 0.7% of its mean value, which is negl...
متن کاملLetter to the Editor A BeppoSAX observation of the Crab Pulsar (PSRB0531+21)
The Crab Pulsar (PSR B0531+21) was observed by the four Narrow Field Instruments onboard the Italian-Dutch satellite BeppoSAX in August and September 1996, during the Science Verification Phase. The fine time resolution (15 μs) and high statistics provided phase histograms of very good quality over the entire energy band (0.1–300 keV) covered by BeppoSAX payload. In this letter we present a det...
متن کاملA review of x-ray spectral evolution in Crab pulsar
Pravdo et al (1997) claimed that the phase resolved x-ray spectrum in Crab pulsar (PSR B0531+21) shows a spectral hardening at the leading edge of the first peak of its integrated profile (IP); this was a new and unexpected result. This article reanalyzes their data, as well as some other related data, and argues that the spectrum is as likely to be unvarying (i.e., neither hardening nor soften...
متن کاملNustar Hard X-ray Observations of the Energetic Millisecond Pulsars Psr B1821−24, Psr B1937+21, and Psr J0218+4232
We present Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) hard X-ray timing and spectroscopy of the three exceptionally energetic rotation-powered millisecond pulsars PSRs B1821−24, B1937+21, and J0218+4232. By correcting the NuSTAR on-board clock for phase and frequency drifts between observation intervals, we are able to recover the intrinsic hard X-ray pulse profiles of all three pulsars wit...
متن کاملHard X - ray timing and spectral properties of PSR B 0540 - 69
We report the hard X-ray properties of the young Crab-like LMC pulsar PSR B0540-69, using archival RXTE PCA (2 – 60 keV) and RXTE HEXTE (15 – 250 keV) data. Making use of the very long effective exposure of 684 ks, we derived a very detailed master pulse profile for energies 2 – 20 keV. We confirm the broad single-pulse shape with a dip in the middle and with a significant fine structure to the...
